One of the total 51 Shaktipeeths spread across the country is Mahakali at Pavagadh. This form of Goddess Parvati has been created to destroy demons and devotees believe that by worshiping her, demonic factors wrapped around a person's life are destroyed. This place is also considered excellent for severe austerities. Kalika Mataji of Pavagadh is worshiped as Dakshin Kali. Hence worship is done here according to Vedic and Tantric rituals.
Years ago, a king of Patai clan was ruling in Pavagadh-Champaner panthak. He was an ardent worshiper of Kalaka Mata and, pleased with his devotion, Kalaka Mata used to come here every nine days of Navratri to perform garba. King Jai Singh, the last ruler of the Patai clan, who once drank alcohol on Navratri and saw Mataji playing garb and became enamored with her form.
He held Mataji's palav and asked her to become queen. Even after Mataji explained a lot, Patai Raja Jai Singh did not give up his stubbornness, so Mataji got angry and assumed her original form and cursed the king that your kingdom will be destroyed in the next six months. Accordingly, only six months later Suba Mahmud of Ahmedabad invaded Pavagadh.
